Intensive Care Home Page
Welcome to the Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) section of the Acute Care Common Stem website.
As part of the second year of ACCS training you will spend 3-6 months in ICM (minimum of 3 months) depending on the deanery in which you are working. During this time you should follow the competency based curriculum as defined by the Intercollegiate Board of Intensive Care Medicine which is divided into a basic syllabus (for the initial three months) and an intermediate syllabus for those trainees completing a further three months ICM in ACCS. It is required that you keep an Educational Training Record, complete the specific ICM competencies as defined in the curriculum and attend the specific tutorials and education sessions as required by your deanery. In addition you must complete a selection of generic work based assessments (CbDs / Mini-CEXs etc) to complement your training as well as a multi-source feedback appraisal. As part of the ACCS programme you must continue to maintain your portfolio and logbook (see below) showing the case mix of patients you have managed during the ICM module.
ICM Logbook
There is now a specific ICM logbook for completion during the ICM module. Until the NHS electronic portfolio is fully developed, the IBTICM suggests that trainees use this electronic logbook to keep record of work done and cases they have been involved with. The cross referencing guide must be used to ensure patient anonymity. The logbook should be used to record all experiences that have a learning benefit.
Categories of ICM involvement to be recorded in the logbook:
- Consultation without admission
- Resuscitation and admission
- ICU admission
- ICU Patient: major involvement
- ICU Patient: minor involvement
- Intra-hospital transfer
- Inter-hospital Transfer
- Resuscitation (Failed)
- Procedures and Interactions
- Education
Training in Intensive Care
Intensive care medicine does not form one of the parent specialities for ACCS trainees. Therefore trainees wishing to specialise in ICM must do so as part of a joint CCT programme with their parent speciality to gain dual accreditation with ICM. Application to this programme is through competitive entry and involves undertaking a further year of advanced level training in critical care. For further information on application to the joint CCT programme see the IBTICM website. The ICM college tutor, Deanery ICM Programme Director and ICM Regional Advisor can provide further information specific to your deanery.
The ACCS curriculum for ICM can be found on the following pages. Below are the IBTICM curriculum documents that span the entire of ACCS training and form useful references for ACCS trainees, especially those wishing to apply for further training in ICM.
